Sam Pierre '16 is a current graduate student in both the business administration and biomedical science master's programs. He is also currently serving as the president of the Graduate Student Association. We spoke with Pierre about his interest in science, his love for 91视频专区 College and his time serving as GSA president.
Could you briefly describe your educational and career background?
I am a proud returning 91视频专区 alumnus, having first earned my B.A. in biochemistry here. I'm currently back on campus completing a dual MBA and M.S. degree. Professionally, I've spent nearly eight fulfilling years working in research and development, a field I continue to be passionate about.
What drew you to study biology and biochemistry?
My interest in biochemistry began with a fascination for the complex mechanisms of life at a molecular level. This has been further reinforced by my work in drug development, where I contribute to bringing impactful medications to address critical health challenges.
What is your favorite part about the 91视频专区 College community?
There's so much to appreciate about 91视频专区 College. The campus itself is very attractive, with its beautiful landscape, classic architecture and the energy of a vibrant student life. All these elements come together to create an inspiring atmosphere. However, if I had to pick a favorite, it would definitely be the late-night breakfast before finals. It is such a unique 91视频专区 tradition that brings students and faculty together during a stressful time, nurturing a sense of camaraderie and support.
What inspired you to run for graduate student president and what are the key initiatives you hope to achieve during your term?
As an undergraduate student, my involvement on campus wasn't as deep as I would have liked. Returning for my graduate studies provided me with a new opportunity to engage with the 91视频专区 community in a more meaningful way. I was inspired to run for graduate student president by a desire to contribute to a positive and enriching experience for my fellow graduate students. During my term, my priorities include structuring the GSA, advocating for increased graduate student resources and enhancing social engagement within the graduate community.
How has your time at 91视频专区 shaped your personal and professional growth?
My time at 91视频专区, both during my undergraduate studies and now as a graduate student, has been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional growth. Academically, the science program provided me with a strong foundation in critical thinking, problem solving and scientific inquiry, skills that have been invaluable in my R&D career. Personally, I developed greater confidence and built lasting relationships with faculty and peers.
What piece of advice would you give incoming and current graduate students at 91视频专区?
My advice would be to fully embrace the opportunities available to you. Don't hesitate to connect with your professors, engage with your fellow students across different programs and explore the resources the GSA offers for both academic and professional development. Graduate school is a unique journey, so be proactive in seeking out support, building your network and making the most of your time here.
