This year marks my 25th year with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), where I have dedicated 23 of those years to serving as a special educator. Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of leading as the head of special education for seven years. Currently, I am in my second year working as an Alternative Programs (Alt 1) teacher.  In my current role, I provide targeted academic, social and emotional support to students within a comprehensive high school setting. My focus is on helping students navigate challenges and build the skills they need to succeed, both in school and beyond.

I hold both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Education in Special Education from the University of Maryland, College Park. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher, Highly Qualified in Special Education since 2010. Throughout my career, I have remained passionate about being a strong support and resource for students and their families. There is no greater reward than witnessing students beat the odds, achieve their goals and realize that what once felt “impossible” is truly within their reach.

I chose to enroll in the educational leadership program at 91��Ƶר�� College based on the consistently positive feedback I received from both current and former MCPS colleagues, who spoke highly of their academic experiences and the supportive learning environment. Additionally, Professor Daniel Shea, director of the educational leadership program, played a pivotal role in my decision to select 91��Ƶר�� College. His thorough explanation of the graduate program, prompt and informative responses to my numerous questions, and his professional and approachable manner gave me confidence that 91��Ƶר�� College is the right place to pursue my graduate studies.

Attending 91��Ƶר�� College offers an opportunity for both professional and personal growth. 91��Ƶר��’s strong academic reputation, supportive learning environment with experienced faculty and opportunities for meaningful collaboration will allow me to deepen my expertise and gain the leadership skills necessary to prepare me to become a more effective and impactful educational leader. Personally, I look forward to growing through new perspectives, connections and experiences that align with my values and passion for lifelong learning.

Earning my National Board Certification has been one of the most impactful milestones in my professional journey. The rigorous, reflective process required me to examine my instructional practices through a critical lens, prioritize student-centered learning and continually assess the impact of my teaching on students’ growth. It reinforced the importance of equity, collaboration and evidence-based practice, which are essential core values that I carried into my leadership approach as a RTSE.

As an educational leader in my role as a RTSE, National Board Certification directly influenced how I approached decision making. I strived to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, supported teacher development and empowerment, and advocated for best practices that close achievement gaps. The National Board Certification process has also deepened my appreciation for professional standards and the importance of aligning instruction with both data and student needs.

I believe a graduate program at 91��Ƶר�� College will continue to build upon this foundation by deepening my knowledge of educational leadership, policy and research. I believe it will also provide me with the tools to more effectively lead systemic change, mentor educators and contribute to a broader educational impact beyond the classroom. Through rigorous academic courses, peer collaboration and guidance from established faculty, I look forward to enhancing my leadership capacity and expanding my influence within the educational community.
