Artists Yetunde Sapp and Jonah Elijah will show and discuss their public art and mural work that explores protest, Black culture, and Black Lives Matter. "The Art of Justice" is a part of a year-long series of events designed to help us better understand race and politics.

Yetunde is a multimedia artist, muralist, and creative director native to Washington DC. Her identity as a black woman comes as a constant source of inspiration in her work as both an artist and organizer, as she constantly navigates her identity in the context of predominantly rich and white spaces. In the wake of COVID-19, Yetunde embarked on her first entrepreneurial venture, SLAChouz, which stands for

“Support a Living Artist Collective” house- a BIPOC artist residence and content house that serves as a space for artists of color to thrive, collaborate, and access necessary resources to succeed.

Jonah Elijah’s work encapsulates black life in America and addresses controversial issues that actively affect the African American community. Using materials to explore economic inequality, displacement, or human rights Elijah’s artist practice embraces discomforting realities. Using his own upbringing, Elijah creates work that reflect the black experience. Whether in his paintings or installations, Jonah layers his work with coded language offering an abstracted or representational view of what it’s like to be black today.

This event is presented by the 91��Ƶר�� College Department of Political Science and is co-sponsored by the African American Studies Program, Humanities Colloquium and the Black Student Union.
